For days I’ve been planning to bake some ANZAC bikkies to commemorate ANZAC Day, the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand troops landing on Gallipoli in 1915, and to share the recipe.
But having visited the Australian War Memorial in Canberra for the first time recently, the memory of the sea of poppy red flooding the walls covered with thousands of young people’s names still vivid, I thought I’d do something different today. (2012 update: there are still no cookies but I made this delicious: Mix and bake ANZAC and apple slice recipe).
I am not going to feature an ANZAC biscuit recipe on my blog, not this year at least. Instead, I’d encourage you get your ANZAC bikkie recipe, while supporting the returning service men and women. How? The Australian War Memorial and its online store has a great range of products that support Aussie veterans, including ANZAC biscuit recipe aprons and tea towels (pictured below).
Alternatively, you can purchase a pack of Unibic ANZAC biscuits as the company supports both the Australian Returned Services League and the Royal New Zealand Returned Services Association by donating a part of the proceeds to assist veterans and their families. Their biscuits are also available outside of Australia and New Zealand in US, Canada, India and the UK.
And please do go and visit the War Memorial in Canberra sometime, it’s a heart-moving experience. To find out more about ANZAC traditions go to the AWM website.

Lovely post. I have never been to the memorial in Canberra but I would like to. Very moving. The poppies always make me a little sad, they’re so beautiful.

Great post. Very moving to remember the sacrifices made for us all.
It’s been my first year away from the ceremony and it amazes me to think that other countries remain so unaware of the courage of these soldiers.
A very lucky country indeed.
You are right in saying that many people, especially in European countries – I know, I’ve been schooled there, do not realise the Australian and New Zealand troops’ involvement in WWI…
Your picture at the War Memorial is beautiful – I haven’t been but really should.
[…] They wrap you up snuggly in a winter porridge blanket, they are perfect for a last minute breakfast smoothie… they even provided a home comfort our soldiers during WW2 in the form of an ANZAC biscuit. […]
